Rhythm is an essential element of music, arguably the most essential. Without it, even the world’s most beautifully produced pitch has nowhere to go, nothing to drive the sound forward. Without rhythm, that sound never reaches its full potential of becoming actual music. Without a strong foundation in rhythm, your students will never reach their full potential as musicians.
Take a look at these four lines of rhythm. Can you easily perform them using the rhythm method you are using to teach your students? Can you say these rhythms without using "crutch words"? (ex. pie ap-ple, huckleberry or other non-music words) Can you accurately clap these patterns straight through all four lines with ease? Do your 3rd & 4th graders have a complete understanding of these rhythms and can they perform them with ease? |
If you could answer "no" to any of these, it might be the time to explore new ways of approaching rhythm.
